I was poring over some NFL stats today when I came to a shocking realization: Gisele Bündchen, wife of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, is one of the foremost thinkers when it comes to American Football.
We already know that Bündchen makes the majority of the decisions in the family, famously stating who the couple would be voting for. We also know that Tom Brady was a mediocre quarterback during his early career. This was a man who sat behind Brian Griese at the University of Michigan. Does that sound like the beginnings of the best NFL quarterback of all-time?
In his two years as a starter at Michigan Brady had a pretty average 30 TDs and 16 INTs playing in a college system against bad opponents. His early NFL career was pretty similar with good, not great numbers. Then in 2007 Brady suddenly became an elite passer and one of the best of his generation? What happened? Did he, after a lifetime playing football and seven years in the NFL, suddenly become something he had never been? Of course not. He began seeing and later married one of the most brilliant football minds, Gisele Bündchen.
In fact, Bündchen might just be a brilliant mind period. This is a woman who runs a “green blog” and has spoken on, donated to, and volunteered for a number of environmental causes. Her house is equipped with a number of advanced eco-friendly systems. Definitely not the doings of your average person.
Brady has never once come across as a better than average thinker. His interviews can hardly be called wordy and his vocabulary seems similar to the President Elect he at one point may have supported. People have tacked this up to a Belichickian caginess but the truth is that Brady just isn’t very smart. Sadly this is yet another story of a mediocre man being propped up by an exceptional woman.
Pre-Bündchen Brady is a very pedestrian quarterback. His average game was 20/32 for 225 yards, 1.5 TDs and 0.8 INTs.
Post-Bündchen Brady is elite. His average game is 24/37 for 284 yards, 2.2 TDs and 0.5 INTs.
Spread across a season:
Pre- 316/511 (61.9%) for 3,594 yards, 25 TDs and 13 INTs
Post- 381/587 (64.8%) for 4,550 yards, 35 TDs and 9 INTs
The conclusion here is obvious: Gidele Bündchen helped Tom Brady go from an above-average NFL QB to an elite NFL passer.
