To Be a Real Man

I think lost in the bombardment of women with what they need to do to be considered attractive, is the bombardment of men with what they need to do to be considered masculine.  How these measure up to each other and interact is a discussion for a different day, what I want to do is address the latter.

To be a Real Man you don’t need to have a ‘cool’ car or even a masculine car, or a truck or anything.  Real men understand that we’re all different and while some people make decisions based on looks, other make them based on functionality.  Confidence isn’t driving a Ford F-350 with truck nuts, it’s driving a pink smart car if you want and not giving a fuck.

To be a Real Man you don’t need to ‘wear the pants in the relationship.’  Real men know that relationships are about compromise, and that really…making every single decision starts to suck in a hurry.

To be a Real Man you don’t need to hold the door open, or to treat women like shit to affirm your masculinity.  All women are different and while some want you to be their knight in shining armor, others want to open their own damn door.  More than that, women are capable of wanting different things at different times (shocker).  Feminism is about allowing women the power and freedom to make their own choices.  Chivalry doesn’t make you any more of a gentleman, nor does pushing her head down to suck your dick make you any less of one (or her any less of an empowered woman), it’s about ensuring your wants and hers coincide.

To be a Real Man you don’t need to wear any one particular thing.  Did we suddenly forget that pretty much anyone can wear jeans and a T-shirt, or a tux, or almost every article of clothing?  Real men make their own decisions on what they wear…or they realize how trivial clothing really is.

To be a Real Man you don’t need to play sports, or like sports.  I mean…seriously?!  How are sports, in any way, considered to be some exclusive male domain?

Definitions of masculinity are completely arbitrary and shift alongside society.  Being a Real Man or a Real Woman largely boil down to being a good human.
